Crisis Negotiation Team
The Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) is a specialized unit trained to peacefully resolve high-risk situations through communication and negotiation. Their primary goal is to preserve life by using verbal strategies to de-escalate crises and achieve voluntary compliance without the use of force.
Core Responsibilities
- Hostage Situations: Engage with hostage-takers to ensure the safe release of victims.
- Barricaded Subjects: Negotiate with individuals refusing to surrender, reducing the risk of harm.
- Suicidal Subjects: Intervene in situations involving individuals threatening self-harm, providing support and resources.
- High-Stress Incidents: Assist in resolving emotionally charged or volatile encounters through dialogue.
- Intelligence Gathering: Collect and analyze information about subjects to inform negotiation strategies.
- Collaboration with REACT: Work closely with tactical teams to ensure coordinated responses during critical incidents.
Training & Standards
- Negotiators receive specialized training in psychology, communication techniques, active listening, and crisis intervention. They maintain proficiency through scenario-based exercises and ongoing education.
CNT is an additional assignment for officers regularly assigned to other units.
