Florida Men Arrested on Weapon, Fraud Charges
Bolingbrook, IL — On Wednesday, July 22nd, at approximately 3:48 PM, officers with the BPD Problem Oriented Policing Unit responded to Macy’s at 645 E Boughton Rd. for two subjects wearing hoods and masks, loading up a large amount of merchandise into a cart. Prior to officers' arrival, the subjects attempted payment using a credit card which was declined. The subjects exited the store and entered into a white BMW with Ohio registration. Officers were then informed of an incident that just occurred at Target at 1188 W Boughton Rd., where over $5,000 dollars of electronic tablets were purchased fraudulently with a credit card. The description of the Target suspects and vehicle, including registration, matched the description of the individuals at Macy’s in the white BMW.
Officers then conducted a traffic stop on the BMW in the parking lot of 699 E Boughton Rd. While being ordered out of the vehicle, the driver, Darius J. Wiggins, 24, of Margate, FL, placed the vehicle in reverse but was quickly removed and detained. The passenger, Shawn T. Silfrin, 25, of Pompano Beach, FL, was found to be in possession of a loaded FN 5.7mm handgun on his person. After further investigation, Wiggins was released without charges and Silfrin was charged with Aggravated Unlawful Possession of a Weapon and transported to the Will County Adult Detention Facility .
Further investigation revealed that the credit card used in this case was obtained from a victim via a telephone scam. In addition to the fraudulent purchase, a large amount of currency was withdrawn from the victim’s bank account. Probable cause was later developed for the arrest of Darius Wiggins and officers took him into custody yesterday in Naperville after he attempted to flee on foot. After consultation with the Will County State's Attorney's Office, the following charges were approved:
- Shawn T. Silfrin - Armed Violence (2 counts), Aggravated Unlawful Use of Weapon (2 counts), Unlawful Use of Credit Card, Fraud, Deceptive Practice, Burglary
- Darius J. Wiggins - Unlawful Use of Credit Card, Deceptive Practice, Resisting Arrest
