Traffic Unit

The Traffic Unit is a specialized unit responsible for promoting roadway safety and enforcing traffic laws. Its primary mission is to reduce traffic-related injuries and fatalities through proactive enforcement, education, and engineering collaboration. Traffic Unit officers receive advanced training in accident reconstruction, radar/LIDAR speed enforcement, and impaired driving detection. The unit utilizes marked and unmarked patrol vehicles, and specialized equipment such as speed trailers and electronic message boards.

Core Responsibilities

  • Traffic Law Enforcement: Monitor and enforce local and state traffic regulations, including speed limits, impaired driving, distracted driving, and seatbelt compliance.
  • Crash Investigation: Respond to and investigate motor vehicle collisions, including serious injury and fatal crashes, utilizing advanced reconstruction techniques when necessary.
  • Traffic Flow Management: Assist with congestion mitigation, special event traffic control, and emergency roadway closures.
  • Public Education: Conduct community outreach programs focused on safe driving practices, pedestrian safety, and bicycle awareness.
  • Data Analysis: Collect and analyze traffic-related data to identify high-risk areas and recommend targeted enforcement or engineering solutions.
  • Specialized Operations: Support commercial vehicle inspections and school zone safety initiatives.
