Water Reclamation Facilities

Serving Bolingbrook Through Advanced Wastewater Treatment

The Village of Bolingbrook Public Works Department operates and maintains three Water Reclamation Facilities that provide wastewater treatment services for residents, businesses, and the community.

These facilities operate continuously to collect, treat, and safely return wastewater to the environment while meeting strict Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requirements.

Wastewater treatment is one of the Village’s most important services. Through skilled staff, advanced treatment processes, routine maintenance, and ongoing improvements, the Village protects public health, supports the environment, and ensures reliable wastewater service for the community.

Facility Purpose

Water Reclamation Facilities are designed to remove pollutants, solids, and contaminants from wastewater before treated water is safely released back into the environment.

The treatment process helps:

  • Protect public health.
  • Protect local waterways.
  • Maintain environmental compliance.
  • Support residential and commercial growth.
  • Provide reliable wastewater services.

Treatment Process Overview

Wastewater treatment is a multi-step process:

 1. Collection

Wastewater from homes and businesses enters the Village sanitary sewer system and is transported through sewer mains and lift stations to the Water Reclamation Facilities.

 2. Preliminary Treatment

Large debris, grit, and unwanted materials are removed to protect equipment and improve the treatment process.

 3. Biological Treatment

Naturally occurring microorganisms help break down organic material and remove pollutants from wastewater.

 4. Clarification

Solids are separated from treated water through settling processes.

 5. Advanced Treatment & Disinfection

Additional treatment and disinfection processes ensure treated water meets environmental standards before being safely returned to local waterways.
